What is gold leasing?

Is gold leasing the same as a gold loan?

No, it is the opposite. In a gold loan you pledge your gold and pay interest to borrow money against it. In a lease, your gold is leased for use and you collect rental in gold weight.

Yes — melting to 24KT is how purity is certified. It always happens in front of you, every reading is documented, and nothing is final until you confirm.

Do I get the same jewellery back?

No. You receive 24KT gold of the same weight plus what you have earned. Lease pieces you do not wear rather than ones you do.

How much extra gold will I earn?

For the first twelve months the rate is 2% a year, calculated pro-rata on actual days. Once you complete twelve months, the rate becomes 3.5% a year and is applied back to your start date. It compounds annually, and completing a fifth uninterrupted year adds a one-time 1.5% loyalty credit for that year.

Am I paid in rupees or gold?

Does the rupee value of my holding change?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your gold weight grows with rental, and the rupee value of that weight still moves with the gold price. Historically, gold prices have risen over long periods.

Coverage is denominated in gold weight, not rupees — theft, loss, default and force majeure. You are made whole in grams.

Never. Leasing is bailment: the jeweller gets possession and use, you keep ownership, recorded in a stamp-paper agreement under the Indian Contract Act, 1872.

What is the shortest lease?

There is no lock-in. Your gold starts earning a rental from the day the lease begins, calculated pro-rata on the actual number of days it stays on lease. A shorter period earns proportionately less, not nothing. The lease runs in bailment periods of one year, extending automatically for further one-year periods unless you end it. Ending it before a period is completely possible.

Is there a limit on how much gold I can own?

No. Indian law sets no limit on how much gold you may own. The figures people usually have in mind come from a Central Board of Direct Taxes instruction of 1994, which tells tax officers what jewellery need not be seized during a search when its source cannot be established: 500 g for a married woman, 250 g for an unmarried woman, 100 g for each male member. These are seizure thresholds, not ownership limits — and they apply only where the source of the gold is unexplained. Gold you can account for, whether inherited, gifted or bought with documentation, sits outside them entirely. For your own situation, please consult your CA or tax advisor.

Does leasing sell my gold?

No. Leasing does not sell or transfer your gold. Ownership stays with you throughout, under a bailment agreement executed on stamp paper — the same legal footing as renting out a house. You remain the owner from the first day to the last.

Is TDS deducted on my gold rental?

Accepted Answer

No TDS is deducted on gold rental credited to you, because the rental is paid in kind, as gold units, and no monetary value is transferred. Tax on this income is your own responsibility, after consulting your CA or tax advisor. The rental is valued at the market rate on the date it is credited to you. Every credit is dated and recorded in the app, so you have the figures you need for correct determination.
